Kim Howard shares her watercolor travel journal techniques and creative encouragement with small groups of students by taking them to her favorite places in the world and immersing them in a rich variety of surroundings there. "We sit in the heart of a vineyard to paint the old chateau and to smell the earth of France. We sketch musicians playing in the marketplace in Canada. We picnic while painting on the hillside above a Basque shepherd's camp near Sun Valley. I hope my students will experience a new intimacy with themselves and their creativity while they travel." Travel plans may easily include activities for companions who are not interested in painting.

Workshop Locations

Sun Valley, Idaho
Leading her students into the mountains surrounding Sun Valley weekly, Kim teaches a different journaling or painting technique in a new setting each day. For two to three hours, this informal and practical class paints the world-famous Silver Creek Nature Preserve, the sweeping view from the top of Bald Mountain, the original Sun Valley Lodge at America's grande dame of ski resorts, and Idaho's ruggedly beautiful working ranches and farms.

Provence, France

Visit Kim's French home, Le Chat Bleu, in the lush surroundings of southern france. A 10th-century landscape of hilltop villages, cherry and apricot orchards, Cote du Rhone wines, castles ruins and colorful markets are the subjects of this workshop. Stay on the grounds of an old silkworm farm from the 17th-century and experience excellent local cuisine and swim and relax between classes. Kim's love of France, the French culture and language add immeasurably to this travel and artistic experience for her students.

Nelson, British Columbia, Canada

Kim's current Victorian home sits in the quaint hillside town of Nelson overlooks 100-mile-long Kootenay Lake at the base of the dramatic Selkirk mountain range. This charming mining town is base camp for miles of boating, fishing, and backcountry skiing, plus a host of art galleries and street festivals. Students in Kim's Nelson workshop paint on street corners, in cafes, on ferries crossing the lake, on lakefront beaches, and in the beautiful surrounding mountains. Companions who are not interested in painting may lose themselves in myriad activities found in this picturesque Canadian setting.
